I got quoted $18,000 to spray foam my 2,600–2,800 sq ft DIY pole barn. I said no — and did it myself for under $1,800. Here's exactly what I did, why I did it, and why the math makes spray foam a bad deal for pole barns.

I used a DIY hybrid approach: house wrap for air sealing, a home spray foam kit for the tight spots (electrical boxes, seal plates, rim joists, corners), and R-19 faced fiberglass batts for the walls and ceiling. The kraft facing on the R-19 acts as the vapor retarder — no plastic sheeting needed.
The result? R-19 walls and ceiling — the highest R-value of all four options I was quoted — for a fraction of the price. Full closed cell foam gets you R-12 to R-14 on the walls. Open cell? Same. My method beats them both.

And if I ever need to run a wire or add a window? I pull a batt out in 30 seconds. Try that with spray foam.

I'm not anti-spray-foam. I'm anti-wasting money. That's not cheap — that's smart.
