I was scrolling through Google Earth, just wasting time looking at the most remote corners of the Rocky Mountains, when I saw something that just didn’t belong.
Deep inside a valley with no road access, no power grid, and no sign of civilization for fifty miles, sat a abnormal and rather strange perfectly, square structure abandoned deep in the remote wilderness. It looked abandoned—partially reclaimed by the forest. I however upon viewing the strange site on google earth wasn't sure if anyone still remained or if it was inhabited.
There was no way to get there by car. The terrain was brutal. But I couldn't stop thinking about who built it and what it was, why they left or if they did in fact leave, and what they left behind from the bygone era of Mountain men once claiming this remote region for themselves. So, I grabbed my gear, packed for three days, and set out to find it.
Most people look at these remote spots on satellite maps and assume it's just trees. But when you get down on the ground, you realize how isolated this really is. If someone lived here, they were completely off the grid. No neighbors. No rescue. Just them and the mountain.
upon investigation after the trek I discovered this site perfectly preserved in a way. You look at these logs and some of the ancient tool markings it's easy to believe this structure to be over a century old maybe older—they were notched by hand. Whoever lived here put weeks, maybe months, of grueling labor into this structure. And then…they just vanished. Everything is still here. In a way a rusted coffee tin, a pair of boots rotting and very old relics from the late 1800's scattered throughout the forest... It feels like they walked out the door for a minute and never came back. A perfectly preserved Mountain mans missing oasis deep in the rugged mountain from the late 1800's..
