Three in the morning. That’s usually when you find the weird stuff.
I was deep in a late-night Google Earth rabbit hole. You know the drill—just aimlessly dragging the little Pegman around, looking for abandoned gulags, sunken ships, or secret military bases.
Let me set the scene for you. This is the middle of a mountain range. Or maybe the Hindu Kush—I’m keeping the exact coordinates under wraps for reasons I’ll get to in a minute. The point is, this is a hike to the middle of nowhere wilderness. Extreme altitude. Freezing winters, blistering summers. A brutal, vertical desert of grey rock and ice and pine trees.
Look at this. Right down there at the bottom of a dead gorge. Green. Not just a little moss. We are talking about a massive, dense cluster of vegetation. Deep, saturated canopy. Lush. Vibrant.
At first, I thought, okay, glacier melt. Maybe there’s an underground spring. Water equals life, right? But watch what happens when I switch to the historical imagery timeline the terrain itself changes as if someone was building something back here! It’s not seasonal. It’s growing. And then I zoomed in on the satellite data, way closer than you’re supposed to be able to without paying for commercial defense imagery.
There are no roads. No paths. No footprints coming in or out. The nearest village is a four-hour hike across terrain that will make you sore then another hour from your car. But right there, hidden in a shadow where the sun probably only hits for two hours a day… is something built.
So, I did what any obsessed internet sleuth does upon discovery into the unknown untamed wilderness centuries old. I went down the rabbit hole. After finding no information on the site I discovered I decided to make the trek and explore the area.
Which I am proud to say I did and I indeed discovered much more than what I thought this strange area was from google earth.
