Awareness Isn’t Enough | How Repetition Rewires Your Patterns
There comes a point where awareness isn’t the problem anymore.
You already know the pattern.
You can feel it while it’s happening.
You recognize the thought, the reaction, the outcome.
And still… you end up there again.
That’s where most people get stuck.
Not because they don’t understand what’s happening.
Because understanding and changing are two different things.
In this video, I talk about what actually creates change—and it’s not a breakthrough moment. It’s practice.
This is the “P” in the WKRP framework:
Positive Psychology.
Not in the way people usually think about it. Not forcing positivity. Not pretending things are fine. This is about understanding how your brain and body work under pressure—and learning how to work with that instead of against it.
Because when you’re in constant stress, your thinking narrows. Your reactions speed up. You lose access to your full capacity—not because you’re not capable, but because your system is overloaded.
That’s why awareness isn’t enough.
You have to do something with it.
And what you do… repeatedly… is what changes the pattern.
That’s neuroplasticity.
Not one big shift.
Not one moment where everything clicks.
Repetition.
I also walk through how this shows up in my writing.
In Dead Air; The Day the Music Died, Roy Longly is managing a crisis—multiple stations down, pressure from every direction, and people looking to him for answers. The situation doesn’t change. But when he shifts how he’s thinking about it, he gets clarity. And that clarity changes how he leads.
The situation didn’t change.
His thinking did.
And that changed everything that followed.
In The Radio and Records Café, I’m exploring something different—how change actually builds over time. Not in one moment, but through conversations, small realizations, and repeated patterns that slowly become something new.
That’s how stories come together.
It’s also how people change.
You don’t wake up one day and think differently.
You practice something enough times that it becomes the way you think.
That’s why mental health isn’t something you fix once things fall apart.
It’s something you maintain.
The same way you take care of your body.
The same way you build any habit that matters.
Small, consistent choices.
So if you’ve been following along this month, don’t try to change everything at once.
Pick one pattern.
One place where you notice yourself reacting the same way.
And do something different.
Even slightly.
Because that’s how this works.
Not all at once.
Not perfectly.
But consistently.
That’s how you stop ending up in the same place.
And that’s how you start building something better.
