Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday that he did not have confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and endorsed CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani as Mr. Infantino's successor.
Mr. Carney’s comments came days after Mr. Infantino abandoned a proposed sale of 20 per cent of FIFA to private investors to raise US$4.2-billion. The plan had received fierce opposition from the Union of European Football Associations, national soccer federations and senior FIFA advisers.
Mr. Montagliani is FIFA's vice president and the CONCACAF president. The Canadian was instrumental in the country’s bid for the 2026 World Cup.
