Dr. Becky | I didn’t realise how big JWST is until I saw this! #shorts @DrBecky | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 2 days ago
At the University of Cambridge. I was visiting to collaborate on a research project with my colleague, but didn’t expect to walk through the door and see this! It spans TWO whole floors of the building and is even cut around floors and doors to make it fit. In my astrophysics research, I hear all the stats about JWST and how it’s 6.5 meters (~21ft) wide. I’ve even seen footage before of people stood next to JWST when it was being built in NASA’s clean rooms. But until I stood next to this live size model, I don’t think I’d truly grasped just HOW BIG this telescope really is. I am in absolute awe of it, and now want one in my house 😅 anyone else now want one too?

👩🏽💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.
