Part of my inspiration for this trip was to reconnect with my ancestry, and revisit the region where my grandparents are from. They had lived with and raised me when I was young, so it was so nostalgic to hear the regional accent and taste the foods that reminded me of my childhood.
For many years I had felt a bit sad and guilty that we didn’t get to visit them in China as often, as I was growing up and they were growing old. I even wrote a song about this for my grandma, called String Theory on my Honestly album. My grandpa had passed first, and my grandma developed Alzheimer’s later, when I was in my mid 20s. So every visit was precious. Time, invaluable.
