Emergency antibiotics and prescription medications can be valuable preparedness tools—but are they a good idea for everyone? In this video, I take a close look at the Jase Medical Jase Case, explain what emergency medications are included, and share why my opinion about keeping antibiotics on hand has changed.
I’ve talked before about my concerns with antibiotic overuse and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, sometimes called “superbugs.” Those concerns have NOT gone away. Antibiotics do not treat viral illnesses such as the common cold, and having antibiotics available does not mean they should be taken unnecessarily.
What has changed for me is how I think about access to medication.
With more travel, cruises, extended trips, remote destinations, severe weather, supply-chain disruptions, factory shutdowns, medication shortages, and other emergencies, getting to your normal doctor or pharmacy may not always be easy.
Jase Medical provided me with their Jase Case, which includes a physician-reviewed selection of prescription and over-the-counter medications. I’ll show you what is included, how the online medical evaluation works, the MedDeck medication guide, how compact and organized the kit is, and some of the situations where I think emergency medications may—or may not—make sense.
Several of these medications were also very familiar to me from my own recent medical experiences, including Augmentin, Cipro, Flagyl and Zofran. That experience reinforced something important: these are real medications with real benefits, risks, side effects and precautions. Having medication available is not a substitute for appropriate medical guidance.
We’ll also discuss situations where a medical preparedness kit could be especially useful, including international travel, cruises, extended-duration travel, mission trips, camping, backcountry trips, severe weather emergencies and disruptions to the medical supply chain.
My conclusion? My concerns about antibiotic overuse haven’t changed. My understanding of medication preparedness has.
Preparedness isn’t about taking more medication. It’s about having appropriate options available when your normal options may not be.
