He came running across the street because he recognized me from Invisible People. Someone had given him Canadian money, and he hoped I could exchange it for U.S. dollars. He had probably been asking people for help for a while, but everyone ignored him. Then he saw me, and for a moment, I became his only hope.

The left side of his face was swollen, bruised, and cut open. He told me three men had beaten him up to steal his bag. In an instant, he lost the few possessions he had left.

As we talked, I mentioned that I had once been homeless too. He stopped me and said, “I know. I know who you are. I watch your videos.”

I was honored that he recognized me. More than that, I was humbled that he believed I would help.

I gave him some money. He tried to hand me the Canadian cash, but I wouldn’t take it. I just wanted to help.

That’s when he broke down crying.

And then I got emotional too.

Homelessness strips away so much more than housing. It takes safety, stability, dignity, and hope.

No one should be forced to live outside because they can’t afford a safe place to call home.
