Mama Vera is back in the kitchen with one of her old-fashioned family favorites, Sweet & Sour Beef. ❤️
This hearty recipe starts with tender chunks of beef cooked with carrots, onion, and green bell pepper, then coated in a rich homemade sweet-and-sour sauce made with molasses, cider vinegar, tomato sauce, sugar, chili powder, and paprika. Everything comes together into a deep, tangy-sweet sauce that is absolutely wonderful served over hot noodles.
This isn’t the bright red restaurant-style sweet and sour sauce many folks think of. Mama Vera’s version is darker, richer, and much more old-fashioned, with molasses giving the sauce a wonderfully deep flavor. It’s the kind of filling supper that belongs in the middle of the table with everybody reaching for seconds.
🥩 Mama Vera’s Sweet & Sour Beef
Ingredients:
2 lbs. boneless beef chuck roast or top round, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 cans (8 oz. each) tomato sauce
2 cups sliced carrots
1 onion, cut into wedges
1 large green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup molasses
1/3 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon salt
Hot cooked pasta or egg noodles, for serving
This is another recipe from the Mama Vera’s Kitchen collection here on Greg’s Cumberlachia Kitchen, where we share the recipes that have fed our family for years. Some recipes are fancy. Some are simple. The best ones usually come with a story. ❤️
