Today on Gulf Coast Knapping, I break into a massive Flint River chert boulder searching for clean material to turn into a large blade and biface. What started as a rough outer cortex revealed some incredible golden chert inside, and by the end of the session I had already worked it down into a 10-inch biface for the next stages of the build.
This is Part 1 of the process, and there’s still a long way to go before the final blade is finished. Flint River chert can be unpredictable, so every strike matters when working stone this size.
