Geo Beck | I bought the world's oldest rock...(kinda) @Geobeck | Uploaded July 2021 | Updated October 2024, 40 seconds ago.
Have you ever wondered where on Earth the oldest piece of our planet is? Well, it's actually in Australia in a rock formation called the Jack Hills Sandstone - and the zircon grains inside of it are up to 4.4 BILLION YEARS OLD! In this video, come on a journey with me through the life of a zircon crystal. You'll learn why scientists call zircon the 'time capsule mineral', how a zircon crystal can be much older than the rock it is inside of, how we know the age of the earth, what zircon grains look like in fancy microscopes (spoiler alert: they look incredible), and how these tiny pieces of zircon have changed the way we think of Earth's geologic time scale.
As always, thanks for watching, and if you enjoyed this feel free to check out some more of my geology related videos!
