I bought a wrecked 2020 Ford Explorer ST from Copart for just $8,000 — a vehicle that had an MSRP of nearly $60,000 when new.
On paper, it seemed like an insane deal. 400 horsepower, twin-turbo V6, AWD, three rows, second-row captain’s chairs, and a huge upgrade from the older Explorer we’ve been driving for years.
But before I could even start repairing the damage I actually bought it with, the Explorer somehow picked up even more damage. The hood blew backwards, damaged the windshield, hood, and both front fenders, turning an already-wrecked Copart car into an even bigger project.
In this video we get the bodywork handled, replace the damaged radiator support, install an upgraded intercooler for some future power upgrades, fit an aftermarket front bumper, rebuild the entire front end, install a new windshield, and finally let Jaymie take it out for the first real test drive.
The big questions: Did buying a $59,000 SUV for $8,000 actually save us money once everything was repaired... and does Jaymie even like it?
There may also be a reason we suddenly wanted a little more room and second-row captain’s chairs... 👀
Next up, this thing desperately needs a full polish and paint correction — and since it already has the upgraded intercooler, I have a feeling the Explorer ST might not stay stock for very long.
