I went to China's biggest headphone show and asked HiFi brands the dumbest questions I could think of — Sweet or salty? Tubes or solid state? Warm or neutral? Vinyl, CD or streaming? And what colour is your brand? — live at the Shenzhen International Audio Show. From the tiny M0s player built for long flights, to FiiO's lightweight EH11, to Questyle's Current Mode MEX driving the Sennheiser HD 800S, to Matrix Audio's TS1 all-in-one streamer, this is what happens when the people behind the brands drop the marketing script and just have a laugh.

This wasn't a spec sheet tour — I wanted to get to know the people behind the brands.

Sweet vs Salty: Overwhelmingly sweet, but with plenty of chaos — "salty and sour," "I can't make a decision," and "savoury" all made an appearance.

Brand Colours: The best answers for brand identity — Pink for fun and uniqueness, Black & White for "the brand is the main character," Red for fortune and tradition, Black-Gold for classy and elegant, and Colourful "like a painting — different colours combined, we call it balance."

Vinyl, CD or Streaming: Split straight down the middle — CDs and streaming neck-and-neck, with vinyl still holding strong. "I'm a streaming guy" vs "CD" sums it up.

Warm vs Neutral: Warm won the quickfire round, but "Reference" and "Middle" got honest nods — nobody wanted to be pinned down.

Tubes vs Solid State: The most confused and divided question — "Sorry? Tubes or solid state?" led to a perfect "Tubes done really well" and a near 50/50 split across the show floor.
