Is the role of the ‘spiritual teacher’ still relevant on the Direct Path? A man wants to know if his life will improve as a consequence of recognising his true self. And what about the aspects of his life that seem to remain untouched by the non-dual understanding?
Rupert says: ‘Yes, one can expect one’s life to improve. Usually on the inside first, in terms of peace and a sense of fulfilment, and then, in time, our experience of the world also reflects this new understanding. But this usually takes longer.
‘It’s the same with me – I could not say that every aspect of my experience is 100 percent aligned with this understanding. I also have my blind spots, and I think it’s important not to pretend that one is perfect.
‘But not only do I feel it’s important not to buy into the projection of perfection associated with being a teacher – I don’t even buy into the projection of being a teacher. It would be arrogant of me to consider myself a teacher, or you a student. I’m more like an artist sharing my understanding and love of truth – that’s all I’m doing. The whole teacher-student thing is unnecessary baggage. It’s not necessary to do what we do here.’
