Unreal Engine 5 - 3D Volumes From Textures Niagara Tutorial
updated
In this video we take a look at how to use the new Unreal 5.5 Compute Shaders (HLSL) with PCG.
We will use HLSL in PCG to Generate a Grid of Points that will vary the Scale of objects scattered to those points based on the difference in height in a localized area. Resulting in larger objects scattered on localized crevices or peaks.
This video goes over the basics of using Compute Shaders with PCG, and serves as a Introduction.
What is done in this video in HLSL is loosely based on something similar we have done in HLSL during a past Tutorial which can be found here, youtu.be/BrBYkgGMUSQ

In this video we take a look how to use HLSL in Custom Nodes in Unreal Engine 5.4 to calculate and produce a mask for Water Flows and Flooding on Terrains or any sort of Heightmap. This same approach can also be used to create complex texture masking, filtering and pattern generation.
This tutorial will give you the ability to understand how to utilize simple math such as averaging, thresholding and comparing values to produce complex masks/outputs that otherwise might be more costly or intensive to calculate.

1. Avoiding Branches/If Statements
2. Constant Variables
3. Low Precision Variables
Technical Summary:
If/Statements can introduce branching whereas step will avoid branching, in this simple example its not going to make a difference really.
The main point was just to show how you could use a step to avoid using a If/Statement if there was significant branching/divergence.
GPUs use multiple threads to process data, and these threads are grouped into clusters (Warps/Wavefronts). If one of those clusters hits a if statement that has varying results, sometimes passing the condition, other times not. This introduces divergence, where the whole group of threads has to wait while all possible branches are processed.
Whereas when you use a step function, it will avoid branching. It just performs the operation across the threads.
Of course there may be some situations where if there's no significant branching/divergence it won't matter much. Optimizations can also be dependent on gpu architecture or the compiler optimizations. Generally the best way is to benchmark the performance with profiling tools.

25:48 - Just realized in this video I never swapped the Execution Pin on Add Instances from Rows Found To For Loop Complete Instead. Please do that for the most optimized performance!. Also swap the Set Array to a Add Array, with the bottom Pin to the Info you want to Add (Return Value of Make Transform) and the Array Pin to the Array you are adding to, InstanceTransform Array. This should speed things up a bit more during compile. Thanks to the viewers for catching that!.

Should I go back to explore?...
Not sure what this place is. Any ideas?
This video will also go over how we can create a render target, assign it to material which gets used within a Post Process all by only using blueprints.
3:50 - Render Targets & Material Assignment With Blueprints
25:15 - Pixelation Effect
43:00 - Quantize Effect
49:15 - Blur/Offset Effect
58:00 - Buzzing/Glitching Artifacts
In this video you will learn how to do the following:
1. Pixelate A Image Using UVs
2. Quantize Colors (Reduce Color Range)
3. Separate Color Channels With Animation/Flicker Using Noise
4. Accumulation Blur/Offset
5. Create/Assign Render Targets With Blueprints
Notes
To clarify, generating a render target for such a effect is not needed. This is covered to go over how creating a render target through blueprints can be done. This may be useful in some cases but if you are just wanting the screen data you can also access this in HLSL in Unreal using SceneTextureLookup.
As mentioned in Comments ScreenPosition node and UV will work for viewport as well without issues. It will show incorrectly in the Material Preview but work for the viewport.
Eg. SceneTextureLookup(uv, 14, false);
where 14 is the scene texture ID, this is covered in this video youtube.com/watch?v=PXLgkxRizPI

Update (5.4+ Fix)
5:25 - This Render In Main Pass Toggle May also turn off the shadow in later versions of Unreal (5.4+), not sure if this is intended by Epic Games. But a work around for this would just be to Make and apply a Material with a Black (Constant 0) set for the Emissive Connection in the Material. And that should make the object Black but still cast shadow (White) giving a useable mask with the object held out.

Tips/Fixes:
I made a mistake and did some bad math, when you shell the mesh. I set it to 20 in the video (11:30). But that causes some overlapping faces because the floor above and below will start to overlap. A value of 11.25 should match up without seams.
This is mainly because the "Options Solids to Shells" will push the geo out a bit when we extrude. To avoid these weird issues its better to turn Options Solids to Shells off. And construct the walls and floors separately.

In this video we take a look at setting up Triplanar Mapping/Projection, the ability to project textures on to surfaces regardless of UVs in Top, Front and Side angles. This can be useful for Landscapes, Environment Pieces, or Masking Snow or Dirt and Grunge on top of UVs.
Other Nodes to do a similar effect can also be used, these nodes are
WorldAlignedTexture
WorldAlignedNormal
This video also explores how you can make these Projections stick for simple Translate or Movement of the objects as well.
For Object Based Triplanar Which Will Support Rotations Make The Following Modifications:
1. Connect Absolute World Position Node to a Transform Position Node (World Space To Local Space)
2. Connect the VertexNormalWS Node to a Transform Vector Node (World Space To Local Space).

Corrections:
- I said brackets a bunch of times in this video when I meant parenthesis.
- When explaining about ways to clamp/limits values here at 43:52, just for clarification.
Saturate will clamp between 0-1 and is very cheap to use, performance wise.
Abs (Absolute) will technically produce values greater than 1 in cases but it'll never produce negative values.
