In this video we take a look how to use HLSL in Custom Nodes in Unreal Engine 5.4 to calculate and produce a mask for Water Flows and Flooding on Terrains or any sort of Heightmap. This same approach can also be used to create complex texture masking, filtering and pattern generation.
This tutorial will give you the ability to understand how to utilize simple math such as averaging, thresholding and comparing values to produce complex masks/outputs that otherwise might be more costly or intensive to calculate.

Technical Summary: If/Statements can introduce branching whereas step will avoid branching, in this simple example its not going to make a difference really.
The main point was just to show how you could use a step to avoid using a If/Statement if there was significant branching/divergence.
GPUs use multiple threads to process data, and these threads are grouped into clusters (Warps/Wavefronts). If one of those clusters hits a if statement that has varying results, sometimes passing the condition, other times not. This introduces divergence, where the whole group of threads has to wait while all possible branches are processed.
Whereas when you use a step function, it will avoid branching. It just performs the operation across the threads.
Of course there may be some situations where if there's no significant branching/divergence it won't matter much. Optimizations can also be dependent on gpu architecture or the compiler optimizations. Generally the best way is to benchmark the performance with profiling tools.

In this video you will learn how to do the following: 1. Pixelate A Image Using UVs 2. Quantize Colors (Reduce Color Range) 3. Separate Color Channels With Animation/Flicker Using Noise 4. Accumulation Blur/Offset 5. Create/Assign Render Targets With Blueprints
Notes To clarify, generating a render target for such a effect is not needed. This is covered to go over how creating a render target through blueprints can be done. This may be useful in some cases but if you are just wanting the screen data you can also access this in HLSL in Unreal using SceneTextureLookup.
As mentioned in Comments ScreenPosition node and UV will work for viewport as well without issues. It will show incorrectly in the Material Preview but work for the viewport.
Eg. SceneTextureLookup(uv, 14, false); where 14 is the scene texture ID, this is covered in this video youtube.com/watch?v=PXLgkxRizPI

Update (5.4+ Fix) 5:25 - This Render In Main Pass Toggle May also turn off the shadow in later versions of Unreal (5.4+), not sure if this is intended by Epic Games. But a work around for this would just be to Make and apply a Material with a Black (Constant 0) set for the Emissive Connection in the Material. And that should make the object Black but still cast shadow (White) giving a useable mask with the object held out.

Tips/Fixes: I made a mistake and did some bad math, when you shell the mesh. I set it to 20 in the video (11:30). But that causes some overlapping faces because the floor above and below will start to overlap. A value of 11.25 should match up without seams.
This is mainly because the "Options Solids to Shells" will push the geo out a bit when we extrude. To avoid these weird issues its better to turn Options Solids to Shells off. And construct the walls and floors separately.
