Everyday Cinematic BirdsThis video shows the brutal side of nature. A 3 day old cowbird chick in a finch nest was overfed seeds and choked to death. It appears the finch mother regurgitated too many seeds into the baby birds mouth which caused the chick to choke and suffocate. The finch mother was not able to remove the seeds before the chick died. This is a common risk for baby birds as their mouths at a very young age can easily be clogged causing them to suffocate if not helped. Usually mothers are able to remove the stuck food but sometimes they are unable to. An explanation video of this event will be coming out shortly.

#babybirds #birdchick #birdnestNest Box Chicks Brutally Attacked by Enraged SparrowEveryday Cinematic Birds2022-08-04 | An enraged sparrow brutally attacked a fellow sparrows nest full of chicks. She flew into the nest an immediately grabbed one of the 12 day old chicks by the neck and started thrashing it around. The other chicks were confused as to what was happening since the bird looked like their mom. I had noticed another bird getting chirped at around the nest so this female sparrow must be the culprit. The father sparrow has been missing for a few days so maybe this female sparrow chased him away. I think this female sparrow wants the nest box so she is trying to remove the chicks.
#nestattack #chicksattacked #brutalattackMother Bird Feeds Chick POOP from Other Chick!Everyday Cinematic Birds2022-07-26 | This was something that I have not seen before. It's extremely common for bird parents to eat the poop (fecal sacs) produced by baby chicks as they still contain nutrients. This situation is rare though as the mother sparrow picked up one of the chicks fecal sacs and actually fed it to another chick. It probably was because she brought food to the nest but picked up the poop before she fed the food so she had to give both or swallow the poop and food.

This allows you to see the inner workings of newly hatched chicks! Sometimes you are even able to see the newly absorbed yolk that feeds them for the first day. This video will focus on being able to see a chick swallow a chunk of green food. You re able to see it pass through the throat until it goes into the abdomen of the chick. Very interesting to watch.
This particular chick is a parasite cowbird in a finch nest. It was eventually overfed leading to suffocation. This feeding was a rather large object of food as the chick has some difficulty swallowing it. It may have been a precursor to what was to come.

Usually their heads pop right up for food but in this case they were barely able to open their mouths to receive the food. Eventually the robin gave up trying to feed the chicks and ate the remaining food. Tiny baby bird chicks like these are extremely fragile and their strength levels can change quickly if they do not receive enough food and warmth.

#NestRaided #ChickDies #BirdNest #NestAttacked #EggsStolen #CowbirdNewly Hatched Parasite Chick Squeaking for FoodEveryday Cinematic Birds2022-07-10 | This cowbird parasite chick had just hatched. Surprisingly it was already making chirping sounds. Most chicks take a few days before they can make a sound. The finches do not realize the chick is an imposter so they feed and care for it as if it was their own chick. Cowbirds are a well know brood parasite meaning they lay their eggs in other nests. They are similar to cuckoos but do not try to throw the other eggs or chicks out of the nest.
#babybird #broodparasite #birdnestFinch Nest RANSACKED by Cowbird Mother after Chick DiesEveryday Cinematic Birds2022-07-09 | This video depicts the unfortunate series of events that lead to this finch nest being abandoned. A brood parasite called a cowbird laid its egg in the finch nest that had 5 eggs in it. Cowbird chicks develop faster than most birds which means it hatches and starts growing sooner than the other chicks. This gives it a competitive advantage over the other chicks. The cowbird hatched and was being cared for by the finch parents while they waited for their eggs to hatch. 4 days after the cowbird hatched the finch eggs were due to start hatching. Unfortunately, the cowbird chick on this day was overfed which lead to it chocking and eventual suffocation. You might think this is a good thing since it is a parasite chick but it is not. Cowbird mothers watch over the nests they lay their eggs in. If the egg is removed or the chick dies, the cowbird mother will become hostile and aggressive towards the nest. This is exactly what happened as the cowbird began to attack and raid the nest. In 24 hours it had stolen 4 out of the 5 finch eggs. To ensure the demise of the nest it also pecked holes in the eggs which will cause the developing chicks to die. The finch mother tired to continue incubation but eventually had to abandon the nest since the eggs were taken or punctured. Nature can be brutal sometimes.

#funny #birdnest #birdchicksFinch Nest Parasitized by Cowbird!Everyday Cinematic Birds2022-05-18 | This nest was built by a house finch. The mother finch laid 5 eggs. A cowbird laid a 6th egg. Cowbirds are a type of bird that lays its eggs in other nests and does not raise its own. This is known as brood parasitism. The finch mother does not realize that there is an imposter egg in its nest. She will brood and raise the cowbird as if it was her own chick. This video shows the nest with the cowbird egg in it and the cowbirds first few hours. Cowbirds hatch in 10-12 days whereas finch chicks hatch in 13-14 days. This gives the cowbird an advantage as it will be bigger than the rest of the chicks. Stay tuned for more videos of the finch nest!
Another well known parasite bird is the cuckoo.

For a few minutes all three of these chicks were thrashing uncontrollably around the nest. These are very young baby birds and this much movement takes a lot of energy. Even during feedings they don't move like this. The best metaphor to describe it is they are basically all having seizures. I'm still unsure what they were reacting to. It could be some of the bird calls that can be heard throughout the video but it is still rather strange. They never did anything like this for the nest of the nesting period.
