Wednesday Hypothetical: What if a large oil tanker is legitimately sunk right in the middle of the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane?
As an engineer, here’s the mechanical and physical reality:
• The navigable channels are extremely tight — two 2-mile-wide lanes (inbound and outbound) separated by a 2-mile buffer zone.
• Water depth in the lanes is typically 200–330 feet — plenty for massive Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) with drafts around 80 feet.
• A single sunken VLCC (over 1,000 feet long and 150–200 feet wide) would physically block or severely narrow one entire lane, forcing ships into single-file traffic or a complete standstill in that direction.
• Strong currents, tides, and the narrow geography make maneuvering around the wreck extremely hazardous for other vessels.
Additional Risks
• Salvage would be difficult and could take weeks to months at that depth under high-risk conditions.
• Environmental disaster: One fully loaded tanker carries up to 2 million barrels of crude — a spill would devastate Gulf fisheries, coral reefs, and coastal desalination plants that supply drinking water to millions.
• Chemical/fire hazard: Crude oil is highly volatile. Impact or damage could trigger massive fires, explosions, or toxic smoke plumes, further complicating rescue and cleanup.
This is exactly why the current situation in the strait remains so fragile — one physical blockage can create weeks or months of disruption.
