Hydrogen is often touted as the energy of the future in a Net Zero world. The thinking is that hydrogen can be made from water (H2O) through electrolysis that could be powered by a wind farm to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen, when burned as fuel in a vehicle or industrial process, has no carbon dioxide output. A main proponent of this 'decarbonization' was Jeremy Rifkin, an American economist, author and futurist. He wrote a book on "The Hydrogen Economy," and another more famous book "The Zero Cost Marginal Society" which was translated into 36 languages. He even claimed to have helped Germany set its energy and climate policies - both of which are now resulting in degrowth and deindustrialization! Germany is the 'sick man of Europe.' In this video, Michelle Stirling, our Communications Manager, offers some plain language insights into why hydrogen is not a simple answer for the future, even though the Canada Energy Regulator and many climate activists are counting on it. A recent JPMorgan energy report by long-time analyst Michael Cembalist called hydrogen "Whydrogen" and "Frydrogen." He sees the costs and processes, and energy losses involved and uneconomical. Michelle also references the work of Prof. Samuel Furfari, a chemical engineer who tried for years to make hydrogen into a viable energy option...and subsequently wrote a book called "The Hydrogen Illusion." (French: "L'utopie hydrogène"). She then discusses the push to have hydrogen in the hands of the public - in vehicles and home heating, and the challenges there.
