So I found a program called "Multidumper" that allows you to export the audio from each channel of VGM files separately. I had a go at properly mixing one of my favourite songs from Sonic 3.

The changes are subtle but here are some of the changes I made:

-EQ'd quite a few of the instruments to remove the flubby low end and some of the piercing highs.
-Added some movement in the stereo field (mainly on the square channels)
-Changed the panning on certain instruments to make better use of the stereo field (not everything is hard panned a-la genesis)
-Added subtle and not so subtle reverbs
-Added delays
-Added pads to beef some sections up
