Before the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, Hyde Park was already a hub for wealthy elites along Lake Michigan. The Hyde Park House opened in 1857, and figures like Mary Todd Lincoln stayed there after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

By 1889, Hyde Park was annexed into Chicago, and soon after the University of Chicago, funded by John D. Rockefeller, was established. Just a few years later, the area hosted the massive 1893 World’s Fair, transforming America’s global image.
