As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, Milton was centered about 20 miles (30 kilometers) west-southwest of Sarasota, Florida, and had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center reported.
The Category 3 storm was “close to making landfall.” It was moving northeast at 15 mph (28 kph), slowing slightly from earlier in the afternoon.
Landfall: It’s not certain where Milton’s center will come ashore Wednesday night because the storm’s path might “wobble,” forecasters say, but the entire Tampa Bay region and points south are at grave risk.
Path tracker: As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, Milton was centered about 20 miles (30 kilometers) west-southwest of Sarasota, Florida, and was moving northeast at 15 mph (28 kph).
Milton forecast to grow in size: Milton has strengthened back into a Category 5 hurricane. Even though it is forecast to weaken before it makes landfall, it will double in size — meaning its disastrous impacts will be felt over a much larger area. Over the past 24 hours, the tropical-storm force winds expanded from 80 miles to 140 miles from its center.
The storm is forecast to make landfall Wednesday night as a major hurricane somewhere on Florida’s Central Gulf Coast, where it could be one of the most destructive storms on record. Its dangerous eye and eyewall could come ashore in the Tampa area and unleash record storm surge while tropical-storm force winds are expected to cover the entire width of the Florida peninsula.
