Milton is expected to remain at Cat.5 strength through Tuesday.
It is then forecast to become a Cat. 4 as the storm is set to interact with wind shear/less favorable conditions off the Florida coast and weaken into a Category 3 shortly before landfall. The storm is then expected to remain a Category 1 as it tracks across the Florida peninsula during the overnight hours Wednesday into Thursday morning.
Hurricane Watches have been posted along the west coast of Florida, and these become Warnings in the hours ahead as confidence grows on track/intensity.
Even the "weakening" of this storm likely doesn't prevent it from being a major hurricane at landfall, and IF the eye passes to the north of Tampa, it would be the worst-case scenario for that city with the onshore wind near/south of the eye pushing the water into the Bay. Either way, significant/damaging storm surge is expected for a large portion of Florida's west coast.
