On September 22, 1989 Hurricane Hugo made land fall in South Carolina as a Category 4 hurricane. Residents packed up as much as they could and headed inland to safety. Some residents like Phil McClellan bunkered down in their home and rode out the storm. Hurricane Hugo caused a total of $7 billion dollars in damage, with most of it concentrated in South Carolina at a cost of $5.9 billion.
