Here are some highlights from the Hurra Coalition’s strategic planning meeting in Istanbul, July 2024. Representing 13 Women’s Rights Organizations from 9 MENA countries, we finalized our 2025 action plan to reform discriminatory laws. Our focus issues include child marriage, maternal custody rights, the equitable division of marital property, media and legal advocacy trainings for young activists from Tunisia, Palestine, and Lebanon. The Coalition also welcomed a new member, the Bahrain Women’s Union.
About the Hurra Coalition:
The Hurra Coalition is a diverse, intersectional group of active women’s rights organizations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that works on reforming family laws nationally in compliance with international human rights standards. Equality Now has been progressively building this MENA coalition since April 2019. Following a regional convening in Qatar, the Hurra Coalition was launched in September 2023, when Equality Now became the Secretariat, enhancing its campaign strategy, legal advocacy and youth engagement.
