In 1711, eight innocent women and one man were condemned in Ireland's largest and final witch trial. Today, I'm going on a journey to find out if their dark history has been completely forgotten, or if their memory survives.
Join me on a historical investigation across Northern Ireland as we trace the chilling story of Mary Dunbar and the Islandmagee witch trials. Starting at the actual site of the trial in Carrickfergus—where a pillory still stands—we are hunting for a modern-day acknowledgment of the terrible injustices these women faced.
Our search takes us through some of the most iconic spots in the area, from the historic backdrop of Carrickfergus Castle to the famous Rhinka dance hall (now a legendary ice cream stop) to the breathtaking cliffs of The Gobbins Visitor Centre.
But does any physical proof of these women remain?
