In The Hunger Games (2012), Katniss Everdeen played by Jennifer Lawrence, discovers that the Career tributes have gathered most of the arena’s food and equipment into a single guarded supply pile. The supplies are protected by land mines left from the arena’s launch platforms.

Working with Rue, Katniss comes up with a plan. Rue distracts the Careers while Katniss fires an arrow into a hanging bag of apples positioned over the mined area. When the apples fall, they land on the mines and trigger a massive explosion, destroying the entire supply cache.

The blast is dramatic in the film and triggers tinnitus for Katniss.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound—often ringing, buzzing, or hissing—without an external source. One of the most common triggers is sudden exposure to very loud noise, such as explosions or gunfire.

Explosions create very high sound pressure levels, sometimes exceeding 150–180 decibels near the source. These pressure waves travel through the ear canal to the eardrum and into the inner ear. Inside the cochlea are delicate sensory hair cells that convert sound vibrations into nerve signals. A powerful sound impulse can:

* Bend or break these hair cells
* Overstimulate auditory nerve pathways
* Disrupt normal signaling in the brain

Because these cells do not regenerate, the brain may start generating abnormal electrical activity that is perceived as ringing.

After acoustic trauma, the auditory system sometimes increases its neural gain (similar to turning up a volume knob) to compensate for lost input. This increased activity can create the persistent phantom sound known as tinnitus.

✅ **Takeaway:**
Explosions like the one seen in **The Hunger Games** generate intense sound waves that can damage the sensitive structures of the inner ear. In real life, this type of acoustic trauma is a well-known cause of **tinnitus**, which is why hearing protection is critical in environments where loud blasts may occur. 🔊👂
