Female humpback whales off the coast of Brazil now have their pick of mates. Males slap the water with their tails and compete for attention, a scene that would have been unthinkable a few decades ago. Driven to near-extinction in the 1980s, humpbacks have made a remarkable comeback, with about 35,000 now living in the South Atlantic.
The recovery follows decades of conservation efforts, including a global moratorium on commercial whaling and Brazil’s ban on the practice. The warm waters off Brazil are now the largest breeding ground for South Atlantic humpbacks, where the growing population continues to thrive.
