Hummingbird Biomimetic Nectar-Collecting Model
This project presents a biomimetic desktop ornament inspired by a hummingbird collecting nectar.
Using laser-cut wooden gears, the model transforms a static object into a dynamic mechanical form, combining natural inspiration with visible mechanical structure.
⸻
Design Concept
The design focuses on recreating the natural motion of flowers and hummingbirds through gear-driven mechanisms.
By replacing electronic motion with purely mechanical transmission, the project explores how machinery can express rhythm, vitality, and organic beauty, allowing wooden structures to appear alive through movement.
⸻
Key Innovations
• Biomimetic mechanical motion driven by rotating gears rather than electronic systems
• Precision laser cutting enables lightweight and accurate wooden gear transmission
• Aesthetic fusion of natural forms and mechanical structure, expressing the idea of “mechanics animating nature”
⸻
Manufacturing and Process
All structural components are fabricated using laser cutting, followed by manual assembly and fine adjustment.
Different wood thicknesses required repeated parameter testing to reduce carbonization and improve accuracy.
Post-processing, including micro-polishing and alignment correction, ensured smooth gear meshing and stable motion throughout the model.
⸻
Materials and Equipment
Main materials include wooden panels, metal shafts, and specialized adhesives.
Laser fabrication was carried out using CutAir laser cutting equipment.
⸻
