In this video you can see the a female ruby throated hummingbird in our backyard drinking nectar. Ruby throated hummingbird are one of the most commonly found humming birds found in Virginia USA. They love to drink nectar from plants like trumpet honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), scarlet beebalm (Monarda didyma), lemon beebalm (Monarda citriodora), wild bergamont (Monarda fisulosa), cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), and trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans).
In Virginia, only one species, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), is found regularly throughout the summer during their breeding season, but the Calliope Hummingbird (Stellula calliope) and the Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) can occasionally be seen passing through the area in fall or winter.
Males usually arrive in mid-April, and the females usually follow in May. They usually leave the state in September to return to their wintering ranges. Most (if not all) hummers are gone by October. Migrating males are usually the first to arrive and the first to depart. The females and the young usually follow about two weeks later.
