We talk a lot about solving homelessness with policy and funding. There’s no doubt that is crucial, necessary work.
But Joan Howard reminds us that a powerful intervention is sometimes the smallest one: Kindness.
Joan — who’s spent decades serving unhoused communities through Food On Foot LA — says that even a smile can change someone’s day. Many people turn away from the unhoused because they don’t know how to help. But even just looking someone in the eye and saying, “I’m so sorry, I don’t have anything today,” might just be the first moment they’ve felt seen in a long time.
And sometimes, as Joan says, “you save a life” just by choosing not to look away.
