Please join the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission (TLHRC) for a hearing on the human rights crisis in Tibet, focusing specifically on the increasing number of self-immolations and the Chinese government policies that have resulted in this tragic situation.
Since 2009, a total of 118 Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest the ongoing suppression of religious and cultural rights. The Chinese government has responded aggressively with harsh sentencing and torture for those suspected of involvement. Given the upcoming bilateral talks on June 7 and 8, in which President Obama will be meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss a number of issues, this timely hearing will highlight the continuing human rights abuses facing Tibetans.
This hearing was recorded on June 5, 2013.
