What caused the modern rise in atmospheric CO₂: human fossil-fuel emissions, temperature-dependent natural processes—or a combination of both?

In this concluding panel discussion, speakers and participants at the Clintel Athens Workshop reflect on the sharply contrasting evidence and interpretations presented throughout the day.

The discussion addresses:

• whether any single experiment proves the origin of the modern CO₂ increase;
• the difference between evidence, inference and scientific proof;
• problems created by comparing measurements with different time resolutions;
• the reliability and resolution of Antarctic ice-core records;
• whether historical chemical CO₂ measurements should be rejected when they conflict with proxies;
• carbon mass balance and the claim that nature is a net sink;
• residence time, adjustment time and carbon-14 decay;
• natural carbon flows and the role of temperature;
• atmospheric CO₂ during earlier warm periods;
• the disputed CO₂ peak found in measurements from around 1940;
• the relationship between climate science, politics, energy and research funding.

Demetris Koutsoyiannis argues that models should reproduce short-term fluctuations as well as long-term trends and warns against combining modern measurements with low-resolution proxy data. Ferdinand Engelbeen defends the mass-balance argument, ice-core evidence and an atmospheric adjustment time of approximately 50 years. Frans Schrijver questions whether ice cores reliably preserve absolute historical CO₂ concentrations. Peter Stallinga stresses that most quantities besides emissions and atmospheric concentration are model-dependent. Hermann Harde maintains that temperature-dependent natural emissions play the dominant role.

The participants also identify important unresolved questions. Why do earlier warm periods not show atmospheric CO₂ concentrations comparable to today? How reliable are historical chemical measurements? Can carbon-isotope evidence resolve the disagreement? And which experiments or observations would help distinguish competing explanations?

Although few participants substantially change their position, the discussion demonstrates the purpose of the workshop: open scientific dialogue between people who strongly disagree, conducted in good faith and without declaring the science settled.
