That’s exactly what Hugo Steiner-Prag gave the world. Born in Prague in 1880 to a bookseller’s family, Steiner-Prag blended mysticism, emotion, and precision to become one of the 20th century’s most haunting and influential illustrators.
He began his formal training at 17, studying in both Prague and Munich, and added “Prag” to his name to honor his hometown. Over the decades, he illustrated more than 800 books — including unforgettable interpretations of Faust, The Golem, The Devil’s Elixirs, and works by Shakespeare and Molière.
Steiner-Prag wasn’t just an artist — he was also a celebrated educator and theater designer. He taught at elite institutions in Munich, Leipzig, and later New York University, and helped shape generations of illustrators through his teaching and private schools in Germany, Prague, and Stockholm.
But his life was also shaped by exile. In 1933, despite converting to Catholicism decades earlier, Steiner-Prag was dismissed from his post in Leipzig under Nazi racial laws. He returned to Prague, opened a school, and fled to Sweden in 1938 as fascism spread. By 1941, he had immigrated to the U.S., where he continued to teach, illustrate, and rebuild his life.
His work is emotional, layered, and filled with the spirit of survival. Whether visualizing Jewish folklore or German romanticism, Steiner-Prag’s art still speaks — and stuns — today.
