The songs are engagingly woven together, creating a musical tapestry, so that one blends into the next. This comprises a suite, easily listenable as a whole. Released in 1954, this album went on to sell over 8 million copies. It was one of the monthly offerings of the early Columbia Record Club--(that's how I got my first copy, long since worn out).
Note: Due to copyright claim, the song 'Autumn Leaves' is not included in this posting.

That was my reaction upon first listening to this captivating ballet suite. Rescued from oblivion, researchers Roderick Spencer and Selwyn Tillett in 1990 were able to compile remaining themes. Thespis ("The Gods Grown Old") was first produced in 1871. The ballet is present in Act 2. Of the five themes, only the Waltz is unique to Thespis. There is, of course, much more to the detective story, but is beyond the scope of this discussion. I hope you enjoy this all too brief bit of deliciousness.

"A common sailor? Oh, fie!" Straight from the vinyl of this stellar 1960 recording, Captain Corcoran's words still amuse. 'Pinafore' was the first of Gilbert & Sullivan's successes, and is the third of Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Savoy' operas, preceded by 'Trial By Jury' and 'The Sorcerer'. It opened on May 25th, 1878 at London's Opera Comique Theatre, and ran for 571 performances. Hugely successful, it is popular to this day. Gilbert's satiric wit adroitly pierced institutions and attitudes, while Sullivan's luminous music is--well, ageless.

This audio reproduction is taken from the ABC DVD, distributed by Kultur.com, #D4317. It is for educational and entertainment purposes only. I own no rights here. (But the DVD is mine).
Patience was the sixth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan. It opened at the Opera Comique, London, on April 23, 1881. In October of that year, it moved to the Savoy Theater, where it was the first theatrical production ever to be lit entirely by electric light. From then on, the G&S operettas would be known as the 'Savoy Operas', and both fans and performers of Gilbert and Sullivan would come to be known as "Savoyards". 'Patience' satirizes the 'aesthetic movement' of the 1870s and '80s in England. ------------Link to Act 1 youtu.be/WBRPp4l5ChI

It is positioned following 'Iolanthe' and precedes 'The Mikado'. The libretto satirizes women's education which, back in Gilbert's day, was just coming into fashion. This is the D'Oyly Carte 1955 recording, not recorded stereophonically. (Decca's first two stereo G&S recordings were 'Pirates of Penzance', and 'The Mikado', both with Peter Pratt, recorded in 1957). The Pirates of Penzance, the fifth opera of Gilbert and Sullivan's collaboration, opened simultaneously in England and America. The opera premiered on December 31, 1879 at the Fifth Avenue Theater in New York with Sullivan conducting, but a single performance had been given on the previous day at the Royal Bijou Theatre, Paignton, England, to secure the British copyright. Finally, the opera opened on April 3, 1880, at the Opéra Comique in London, where it ran for 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York.

Of note in this recording is Donald Adams' marvelous maniacal laugh in "Humane Mikado" (Act 2), and the overall wonderful casting.
The Mikado was the ninth of fourteen Gilbert & Sullivan operatic collaborations. It opened on March 14, 1885, in London, where it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances. To this day, it is the most popular and most performed of their operas, and has been translated into many languages.
