I believe first heard Hozier around the time I was living in Brighton, busking from street, playing open mics and late night bars, recording my own EP and uploading Youtube videos. Authentic and true, he is a true evolution of music, showing not only the influence of greats like Van Morrison, Nina Simone and Woody Guthrie but also cementing what current music can be like. It doesn't have to be watered down and filtered of all personality via all the tricks production uses to wash away a person's true nature. It can be muddy and gritty and thick as molasses. Setting aside the fact that certain institutions have not awarded him justly for his contribution to music over the past decade or more, his music will be remembered and does influence and inspire, as music should.
