Adding loops to knots or pulling out loops is a staple technique in Asian style knotting.
Today's knot is another that is composed of two interlocked overhand knots, which are further ornamented with loops. First a footrope knot of two strands is tied and then loops are added by taking the working ends up around and back through the knot. The loops can be left open to create the butterfly effect or closed down to create a more compact knot.
