MoAn Inc. | How We Speak About The Characters of Greek Myth Is Important, But Not For The Reason You May Think. @MoAnInc | Uploaded July 2023 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
Let's get something straight: all of these women discussed in this video are INCREDIBLE characters.I adore Medea and think Calypso's speech is so important to the narrative of the Odyssey. However, it's important to really highlight women's wrongs as well as their rights. Although Medea is undeniably one of the most fantastic female characters to grace the stage, she also killed her children and her brother. Despite Calypso's groundbreaking speech of the double standards of the gods, her holding Odysseus captive on her island while he cries daily and is forced to sleep with her doesn't make her an icon. It's so vital to continue to raise up these characters while also being realistic about them.
In the same way we discuss and condemn the men of the ancient world, we should also be doing the same to the women.
