Deuteronomy 16:1 says, “Guard the month of Abib”, but in Hebrew it says “Shamar et chodesh ha’Abib” and that tells us a lot more.
Shamar means to watch closely, to search out.
Et can refer to a sign, linking to Genesis 1:14, where the lights in the heavens are signs for moedim.
Chodesh means renewal, and it’s connected to light returning to the moon not the black moon.
Abib is a specific stage in the barley when the grain heads are developed enough to be roasted, but not fully hardened.
So we’re not guessing. The Word tells us how to know the new moon and know when the year begins by watching the heavens and the land, just like YHWH instructed.
This is key to understanding Yom Teruah and the appointed times.
