How does the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee help students explore healthcare careers while building confidence?
For Lakyn, UW-Milwaukee offered the flexibility to pivot from biology to biomedical engineering, pursue research and compete athletically at the Division I level—all while preparing for a career as a physician assistant.
At UW-Milwaukee, Lakyn gained hands-on experience as a research assistant studying shoulder mechanics in wheelchair users and presented her work at a symposium. Her professors encouraged curiosity and offered guidance both inside and outside the classroom. Athletics also played a big role, surrounding her with inspiring women and helping her reach her dream of competing at the Division I level.
Lakyn plans to apply to physician assistant school with a focus on women’s health, combining clinical practice with research to help narrow gaps in health knowledge and care. Most importantly, she credits UW-Milwaukee for the lasting friendships and mentorships that shaped her college experience.
