Using two amps together sounds great, but how do you actually do it?
Welcome to the show. Dan and I pretty much always use two amps on the show, and very often when playing live too. It’s something that countless artists have done down the years… but how do you actually connect them?
In this video we run through the most common and easiest ways to connect two amps together. There are other ways – for example using effects loops, slave/direct outputs and so on – but that’s getting ahead of the scope of this video.
A big part of this video is to do with polarity and phase, which is the most important topic related to using multiple amps. So start by getting your head around that, and move on from there!
Finally, it really doesn't matter what two amps you use! (Erm, just make sure they're both analogue to avoid phase problems, or indeed two of the same or very similar digital amps. Mixing one analogue and one digital will give you phase problems.)

Exploring a cliché or three as we take inspiration from the jangle guitar sound and see what comes next
Welcome to the show! We recently had the great pleasure - nay, honour - of spending a day with flippin’ British pop icon/leg-end, Johnny Marr for an episode of That Pedal Show. Among the incredible experiences that day for me and Dan was Johnny playing two guitars with which neither of us are that familiar: a Rickenbacker 330 and a Fender Jaguar. Dan was so moved by the Jag, we found a way of acquiring one… and I’ve been itching about a Ricky ever since. Thanks to viewer, Mark Kember, we have one on loan for a bit.
Thus, without any further adult supervision, we thought we’d take the opportunity to plug em in, add some classic compression and chorus and see where we ended up… which just so happened to be two cranked 100 watt heads. Heaven knows were not miserable now…

Welcome to the show! “Harumph!”, we hear you cry. “Another mega delay, really?!” Well, this one is genuinely different, using eight BBD chips to create a true stereo, programmable, MIDI-enabled ANALOGUE delay. This hasn’t been done before with this feature set, in this format.

Welcome to the show! Mick here, hello. Grab a beverage of your choosing and get ready to witness THE most frustrating bit of guitar maintenance that I’ve undertaken to date. I mean, why get a professional to do it quickly, cost-effectively and to extremely high quality when I can do it myself, nearly have a breakdown in the process, AND run a huge risk of it not working properly?!
Anyway, yes, I’ve been saying for ages that I’d like to hear some different pickups in the ol’ three-thirty-five, the reasons for which I explain in the beginning of the vid. Then comes the hilariously painful process of actually doing the refit, along with all the ‘doh’ moments and forehead slaps you’d expect… before hearing the old and new electronics back to back.
Was it worth it? I’m still not entirely sure. Hmmmm.
Questions arising…
What about pickup heights?
I set the Lollars to the same height as the Gibson pickups. It might be that their optimum position is elsewhere and that will have a significant impact on the tone. I’ll experiment with that over coming months.
- Is the old loom ’50s wired?
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it is. It looks different because instead of doing it in a ‘rigid’ parallelogram, it’s made as one big string to make insertion / retrieval easier (I presume).
- Are we hearing a difference in strings?
I put fresh strings on before recording with the old pickups/loom, and then another fresh set before recording with the new pickups/loom. I recorded each section in the same order, so the string newness should be very similar in the A/B comparisons. - Why are you wearing headphones in some of it?
So I can hear the backing track.
- Are both amps on?
Yes, both amps are running all the time.

Six-saddle and two-post Fender Stratocaster vibratos - here are three ways to get them working as you want
Welcome to the show! Something a bit different this week as Dan and I ease into a little bit of summer vacation time. A different headspace, if you will.
Now then, I know this has been done to death online but we still get asked for it a lot: just how do you get your traditional Fender Stratocaster vibrato to work (or not work) and stay in tune?
Thusly, this is a personal take on how to approach it, gleaned from years of learning from professional players and techs. It’s highly unlikely there’s any new information here, but I’m taking it slow and doing it in real time so you can see exactly what happens with every adjustment of spring, screw and post.
These methods work for me, I hope they help you and your guitar!
