In this episode, cohost David Stuss and I interview space psychologist and cognitive engineer Iya Whiteley on the arc of her career as a scientist, her journey into the human mind, and how she arrived at an appreciation of non-dual metaphysics and eastern healing modalities.
We also explore how humans both deploy and are products of language, consciousness, intuition and peak performance.
Featured prominently in Diana Pasulka’s second book, “Encounters,” Iya’s professional work includes designing both equipment and training programs to improve the performance of highly trained professionals, including military pilots, astronauts, cosmonauts and surgeons.
She has worked at the European Astronaut Centre for the European Space Agency in Cologne, Germany and collaborated with NASA and the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City, Russia.
Since having her own children, Iya now also teaches courses for parents to help them establish mutually supportive and potentially transformative relationships with their children.
In recent years, her work has been featured on BBC Science, PBS and NatGeo.
We discuss her scientific work and how that was ultimately informed and enriched by a lifelong interest in martial arts and consciousness.
We also explore Iya’s interest in traditional Korean medicine, and the work of Professor Park Jae Woo, and how those principles and philosophies inform her cosmology.
