*How to tile walls in a kitchen or bathroom: a step-by-step guide*
Learn how to tile a shower wall, a kitchen splashback or an entire room with our step-by-step guide:
*1. Mark out the area* – Prepare the work area by laying a drop cloth and covering light switches and plugs. Next, prepare the wall by cleaning thoroughly and using filler to plug any holes. Use a cross-line laser to help you mark a straight horizontal line where you want the first row of tiles to go.
*2. Apply primer* – Use a primer that is suitable for your base surface and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and the number of coats. Wait until completely dry before proceeding.
*3. Mount a tile stop (optional)* – If you are using large or heavy tiles, it is advisable to mount a horizontal stop to prevent them from slipping before the mortar has set. Screw a temporary board to the wall below the lower tile mark.
*4. Apply the mortar* – Mix and prepare the mortar to the correct consistency. Use a tile trowel to apply the mortar from the bottom and work upwards, starting with the first row only.
Tip: Mortar should be roughly the consistency and texture of smooth peanut butter.
*5. Draw grooves* – Use a notched trowel to draw grooves in the mortar while also making sure it is evenly distributed. Comb through with an angle of about 60 degrees.
Tip: Check the instructions on the mortar for the most suitable notch spacing.
*6. Mount the tiles* – Line up your first tile and lightly push it into the mortar. Use a scraper to create a little distance between the wall and tile. Place the second tile flush with the first and nudge to create a little space. Fit tile spacers for identical spacing. Cut the final tile to size, if necessary.
Before starting the next row, remove any excess mortar. Then repeat steps 4-6.
*7. Finishing touches* – Remove spacers immediately after tiling and scrape out any excess mortar. Once dried, you can apply the grout.
