How to tie a Full Windsor knot — slow, mirrored, and with the starting length that makes the tie tip hit your belt. I also show how to adjust and troubleshoot if you get the length wrong, as well as how to add a dimple.
The Full Windsor (also called the Double Windsor) is the big, symmetrical, and formal / professional knot. Wear it for weddings, job interviews, funerals, court, and formal business. It's not a daily casual one — for that, use a Half Windsor or Four-in-Hand.

HOW TO TIE A FULL WINDSOR — STEP BY STEP
1. Flip your collar up. Drape the tie with the wide end on your LEFT (your heart side), thin end on your right.
2. Line up the thin end so it sits just below your nipple — right on your rib cage. This starting position is what gives you the perfect final length.
3. Cross the thin side over to the right.
4. Cross the wide side over top, making an X. Pinch the X with your left hand.
5. With your right hand, slide the wide end up underneath the neck loop, then pull it front and through.
6. Tension down. Switch hands — the inside of the tie now faces out.
7. Wrap the wide end up and through the neck loop again. Bring it down.
8. Fold it over and across the front — this creates the collar of the knot. Pinch with two fingers on the knot to hold a small finger-hole open.
9. Take the wide end up through the neck loop again, then down through the finger-hole you just made.
10. Tighten: stick your thumb under the fold at the top, pinch and twist down, pulling on the fat part at the same time.
11. Shape it: pinch the bottom for a V, and separate the top to give it a clean shape.
12. Pull the thin end to slide the knot up to your neck. Don't go too tight.
THE PERFECT LENGTH TRICK
The tie tip should land right at your belt buckle. One inch either direction is fine. If your tie ends up too high, it stretches your torso visually. To adjust:
- Too high? Raise your thin-end starting point (up toward nipple level or higher) — this lowers the tie tip.
- Too long? Drop your thin-end starting point — this raises the tie tip.
You only control final length with the starting offset. Nothing else matters.
HOW TO ADD A DIMPLE
Stick a finger in the middle of the tie just below the knot. Bunch the material slightly, tuck it under the knot, and pull down. That gives you the clean dimple.
WHEN TO USE EACH KNOT
- Full Windsor / Double Windsor — most formal, symmetrical, best with spread or cutaway collars
- Half Windsor — mid-formal, everyday business
- Four-in-Hand — casual, narrower, slight asymmetry
