Thrift stores are a GREAT place to find furniture that will look amazing with a chalk-style paint makeover. Refinishing secondhand furniture is also an inexpensive and sustainable way to decorate your home!
However, there are a few things to look for, and some things to avoid. Here are some of our top tips:
1) Laminate furniture is very common in thrift stores. Ideally real wood furniture is best, but it's usually more expensive. If you do choose a piece of laminate furniture, just keep in mind that it's best to give it a scuff sand and a coat of primer before you start painting.
2) Don't let out-of-date styles blind you! Try to keep an open mind and just pay attention to the overall shape and size. A lot can be updated with a coat of paint and some new hardware!
3) Check thoroughly for damage. Watch for dents and nicks that might require wood filler.
4) Check all the drawers to make sure they slide properly.
5) Give it a gently shake to see if anything feels wobbly or loose.
