You can get lots of useable fabric from fabric sample books. They are especially useful for small sewing projects like tote bags, cushions and zipper pouches. I tend to buy light to medium upholstery weight fabric from places like ebay and thrift shops.

You can get a lot of lovely prints in different colors for a small price if you are willing to put in a little work to remove the informational glued-on paper backing that tends to be on these types of fabric samples.

You could cut the paper away of course but removing it properly gives you much more fabric to play with!
