A simple workflow that will SHRINK your Photos Library by targeting photos and videos that take up the MOST space (i.e. RAW, ProRes, Cinematic) and have NOT been marked as Favorites. We will then export them as high resolution JPEGs and Standard 4K clips. This is done in a way that will preserve all metadata.
One of the best aspects of iCloud is how with one click, you can optimize your entire Photos library. This does wonders when it comes to shrinking the size of your library on your LOCAL hard drive, but the size of your library in the cloud just keeps getting BIGGER and BIGGER. That is why I came up with this workflow.
As someone who does a lot of tech support with the public, one of the things I've started seeing on a regular basis are Photo Libraries that have absolutely exploded in file size. Camera RAW is great if you're a professional photographer, but if you're an average Joe, this might be overkill.
This workflow targets images and videos that have NOT been marked as favorites. We then convert those images and videos into more data friendly sizes and formats. NOTE: The one and only downside to this workflow is when you export images/videos from a library, there is no way to preserve album structure. For that reason, the one thing you will need to do is to add them manually back into any pre-existing albums. How difficult this will be depends on how many images/videos you convert. Thankfully, this process is a bit easier since all the high resolution JPEGs and standard 4K videos will be grouped together in the Imports Album.
