To safely turn a push mower on it's side, make sure that the carburetor is up and the exhaust is down against the ground. Turning it the opposite way can saturate your air filter with oil causing hard starting, great plumes of smoke, and the engine to run too rich.
Proceed to thoroughly wash, clean, or rinse off the lawnmower in all areas except directly down into the starter... the pull cord area. After cleaning, I like to start it back up and let it run for a minute or two before storing it back in the garage.
