How to Replace Batteries & Turn On ANY Microsoft Bluetooth KEYBOARD there is no USB wireless dongle required. Microsoft identifies as the Designer Compact Keyboard.
How to Replace the Batteries
The Designer Compact Keyboard uses four CR2032 coin-cell batteries.
Turn the keyboard over.
Locate the small battery-compartment release hole on the bottom.
Insert a small pin or similar tool into the hole.
While pressing the release, slide the battery door away from the keyboard.
Remove the old batteries.
Install the new CR2032 batteries, making sure the positive (+) side is facing up.
Slide the battery cover back into place.
After replacing the batteries, the keyboard should have enough power to turn on and enter Bluetooth pairing mode.
How to Connect It to Windows
Windows 11
Turn the keyboard over and slide the power switch ON.
The keyboard should enter pairing mode and its LED should flash. If it doesn't, press and hold the pairing button for about 5 seconds until the LED begins flashing.
On the computer, click Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
Make sure Bluetooth is turned ON.
Click Add device.
Select Bluetooth.
Look for Microsoft Designer Compact Keyboard.
Click it and follow any instructions that appear.
Microsoft also supports Swift Pair, so Windows may simply display a notification asking whether you want to connect the keyboard. If that appears, click Connect.
Windows 10
Go to:
Start → Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices → Add Bluetooth or other device → Bluetooth
Then select Microsoft Designer Compact Keyboard from the list.
Important tip
The Model 1954 is Bluetooth-only, so you don't need to look for a little USB receiver like you would with many traditional wireless keyboards. Your computer needs Bluetooth. If the desktop PC doesn't have Bluetooth built in, you can add it with a USB Bluetooth adapter.
